I get the privilege of spending many hours studying the word of God each day.  Today was Psalm 37 in preparation for Wednesday night.  It pointed out three things that are of value in the political season that we are in. And boy, are they relevant!  I have heard many say that this is the most important election in our lifetime.  I believe I have heard that before, though I cannot remember which election it was.

The Psalm deals with anxiety over the progress of evil and our response to it.  More about this on Wednesday night, but consider three things from the chapter.

First, right out of the gate, is the admonishment not to fret.  Literally, to get angry and all riled up.  That will be the case for many in the coming weeks, but it shows a certain failure to understand whom, exactly, is in control here.  As David points out, don’t forget that the wicked do not have the favor of God and will be “cut down like the grass”!  Not a stable or envious position!

Part of this admonishment deals too with the fact that we can get caught up in evil if we do get too riled up about it.  He warns, “Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.” This “causes harm” literally means “leads to evil.”

Second, we are admonished to rest.  Rest in God.  Rest in what He is able to do.  It says a lot when we do that, because we are acting in faith when we do. Investing the belief that He is able to deliver and that He works directly in the activities of man both bad and good.

Third, the call to contentment is here as well.  So many are clamoring for what others have.  I fear it verges on covetousness.  We are called to be content with what we have, realizing that all that we have comes from the Lord. He is our provider!  He is the one that meets our needs!  We are to look to Him and be content with what He has provided.

May it be that we will walk in these in a way that lets people see our faith and draws them to the contentment found in Christ during this election season!

Blessings to you!
